Yellowtail Snapper Fishing

 

Season

  • Atlantic federal waters: open all year.
  • Atlantic state waters: open all year.
  • Gulf federal waters: open all year.
  • Gulf state waters: open all year.

 

Minimum Size

  • Atlantic federal waters: 12 inches total length.
  • Atlantic state waters: 12 inches total length.
  • Gulf federal waters: 12 inches total length.
  • Gulf state waters: 12 inches total length.

 

Bag Limit

  • Within Atlantic and Gulf state waters, all snapper species are included in a 10 fish per harvester per day aggregate bag limit in any combination of snapper species.
  • Atlantic federal waters: included in the aggregate bag limit of 10 fish per person per day. (excludes red and vermillion snapper).
  • Gulf federal waters: within a 10 snapper aggregate bag limit which includes: mutton, silk, yellowtail, blackfin, gray, cubera, wenchman, and queen.

 

Landing

  • Must be landed in a whole condition.
  • Yellowtail snapper cannot be deboned, filleted, skinned, ground, scaled, sliced, deheaded, or divided on or within the water.
  • Removal of guts and gills is permitted.

 

Gear

  • Hook and line gear is permitted in all federal and state waters.
  • Atlantic federal waters: must use non stainless steel circle hooks when using hook and line gear with natural baits in waters north of 28 degrees latitude. The use of a dehooking tool is also required.
  • Atlantic state waters: the use of a dehooking tool is required.
  • Gulf federal waters: non stainless steel circle hooks are required when using natural baits. The use of a dehooking tool is also mandatory.
  • Gulf state waters: non stainless steel circle hooks are required when using natural baits. The use of a dehooking tool is also mandatory.
  • No bang stick, powerhead, or a handheld device using an explosive charge is permitted to harvest snapper.
