Red Snapper Fishing

Season


Minimum Size

  • Atlantic federal waters: none
  • Atlantic state waters: 20 inches total length.
  • Gulf federal waters: determined by the specific Gulf state. For Florida, it is 16 inches total length.
  • Gulf state waters: 16 inches total length.

 

Bag Limit

  • For Atlantic and Gulf state waters, the aggregate bag limit is no more than 10 snapper per person per day in any snapper combination. Does not apply to federal waters.
  • Atlantic federal waters: 1 red snapper per person per day.
  • Atlantic state waters: 2 per person per day within the aggregate bag limit
  • Gulf federal waters: 2 per person per day.
  • Gulf state waters: 2 per person per day within the aggregate bag limit. For operators and crews of for hire vessels, there is a zero daily bag limit for harvesting and possession.

 

Landing

  • Must be landed in a whole condition with head and tail intact.
  • May remove gills and guts.
  • Red snapper cannot be divided, deboned, sliced, group, deheaded, scaled, filleted, or skinned on or in the water.

 

Gear

  • Hook and line gear is always permitted in state and federal waters.
  • Atlantic federal waters: use of non stainless steel circle hooks is mandatory when using hook and line gear with natural bait in waters north of 28 degrees latitude. The use of a dehooking tool is required.
  • Atlantic state waters: mandatory use of a dehooking device.
  • Gulf federal waters: use of non stainless steel circle hooks is mandatory when using hook and line gear with natural bait. The use of a dehooking tool is required.
  • Gulf state waters: use of non stainless steel circle hooks is mandatory when using hook and line gear with natural bait. The use of dehooking tool is required.
  • No bang stick, powerhead, or a handheld device using an explosive charge is permitted to harvest snapper.
