Mutton Snapper Fishing


Season

  • Atlantic federal waters: open all year.
  • Atlantic state waters: open all year.
  • Gulf federal waters: open all year.
  • Gulf state waters: open all year.

 

Minimum Size

  • Atlantic federal waters: 18 inches total length.
  • Atlantic state waters: 18 inches total length.
  • Gulf federal waters: 18 inches total length.
  • Gulf state waters: 18 inches total length.

 

Bag Limit

  • Atlantic federal waters: 5 mutton per person per day included in the aggregate bag limit of 10 snapper per person per day. Cubera snapper are included in this aggregate bag limit but red and vermillion snapper are not included in the aggregate bag limit.
  • Atlantic state waters: 5 mutton per day included in the aggregate bag limit of 10 snappers per day in any combination of species.
  • Gulf federal waters: 5 mutton per person with a 10 snapper aggregate bag limit which includes silk, wenchman, mutton, gray, cubera, blackfin, queen and yellowtail snappers.
  • Gulf state waters: 5 mutton per day included in the aggregate bag limit of 10 snappers per day in any combination of species.

 

Landing

  • Must be landed in whole condition with head and tail intact.
  • Removal of guts and gills permitted.
  • Mutton snapper may not be deboned, scaled, skinned, divided, filleted, ground, sliced, deheaded while in or on the water.

 

Gear

  • Hook and line gear is permitted in all federal and state waters.
  • Atlantic federal waters: non stainless steel circle hooks are mandatory with hook and line gear using natural bait in waters north of 28 degrees latitude.
  • Atlantic state waters: use of a dehooking device is required.
  • Gulf federal waters: non stainless steel circle hooks are mandatory when using natural baits. At least one dehooking device is required.
  • Gulf state waters: non stainless steel circle hooks are mandatory when using natural baits. At least one dehooking device is required.
  • No bang stick, powerhead, or a handheld device using an explosive charge is permitted to harvest snapper.
