Hogfish Fishing

  • All Atlantic regulations apply to Monroe County, Florida.
  • Atlantic state waters includes all state and federal waters south of Cape Sable including the Florida Keys.

 

Season

  • Atlantic state waters: May 1-October 31.
  • Atlantic federal waters: May 1- October 31.
  • Gulf federal waters: open all year.
  • Gulf state waters: open all year.

 

Size Limits

  • Atlantic state waters: 16 inches fork length.
  • Atlantic federal waters: 16 inches fork length.
  • Gulf federal waters: 14 inches fork length.
  • Gulf state waters: 14 inches fork length.

 

Bag Limits

  • Atlantic state waters: 1 per person per day.
  • Atlantic federal waters: 1 per person per day.
  • Gulf federal waters:  5 per person per day.
  • Gulf state waters: 5 per person per day.

 

Landing

  • Hogfish must be landed with head and fins intact.
  • Hogfish cannot be deheaded, sliced, scaled, skinned, deboned, filleted, ground, or divided while on or in the water.
  • Removal of guts and gills is permitted.

 

Gear

  • Hook and line gear is permitted in all federal and state waters.
  • Atlantic federal waters: non-stainless steel circle hooks are required when using a hook and line with natural baits. These hooks are required north of 28 degrees latitude. A dehooking tool is also mandatory.
  • Atlantic state waters: A dehooking device is required and legal gear includes: seine, hook and line, cast net, gigs and spears.
  • Gulf federal waters: non-stainless steel hooks are required when using a hook and line with natural baits. One dehooking device must be used to remove hooks.
  • Gulf state waters: non-stainless steel circle hooks are required when using a hook and line with natural baits. A dehooking tool is also mandatory. Legal gear includes: seine, hook and line, cast net, gigs, and spears.
  • No bang stick, powerhead, or a handheld device using an explosive charge is permitted to harvest snapper.
